Earth Charter Community Summits:Launched in 2001 from University of Tampa’s Pepin Rood Stadium connecting 12 cities via satellite broadcast; Currently over 50 cities have participated in the annual Summits; 2008 Summits will be held in 50 US and 8 international cities connected by web technology to address climate change and its effects. Partners include United Nations-Habitat, Physicians for Social Responsibility National, ICLEI-US (Mayors’ climate change program in 1000 cities), & Citizens Network for Sustainable Dev. City Governments:Resolutions in several major cities including Seattle, Philadelphia and Santa Rosa, and one county (Ventura), recognizing the Earth Charter. Santa Barbara, CA will use Earth Charter as framework for making food/energy production local. Corvallis, OR is using Earth Charter as framework for sustainability planning. Universities:University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh has designed and implemented a Campus Environmental Audit plus a Global Educator Certificate program featuring Earth Charter. Currently working with Mayors of three surrounding cities in using Earth Charter. State University of New York at New Palz established a new student organization, Student Organization of Business Ethics & Research, based on the Earth Charter. Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA & College of Menominee Nation in Wisconsin integrated EC into curricula. Schools:Middle/ High school workbook on Earth Charter principles published in accordance with California educational standards by Sisters of St. Joseph at Centers for Social Justice, Santa Rosa, CA. YES! Magazine posted on-line Earth Charter Curricula Module with articles, questions and glossaries. Sustainable Business Awards: Business and community leaders in Tampa developed EC Sustainable Business Awards to build interest in and commitment to sustainablebusiness by companies and the general public. Criteria based on comprehensive EC principles. Professional Code of Ethics: World Federation of Engineering Organizations, with eight million members, used the EC for Code of Ethics. Earth Scouts: Using the motto, “Changing the World One Fun Badge at a Time”, chosen by kids in Tampa, the Earth Scouts is a national program designed for boys and girls 3 to 13 years of age. Badges based on Earth Charter principles. Faith Communities:Adoption of EC by Episcopal Diocese in Seattle for interfaith discussions; Interfaith Study Guide --Louisville, Ky; Interfaith Study Guide--Sisters of Notre Dame; International Earth Day prayers booklet--Dominican Sinasawa Sisters in Sinasawa, WI Earth Charter Community Champions: Recognition of individuals and organizations within the community that are implementing Earth Charter principles in Ventura, CA Residential Homes for Seniors: A corporation for retirement centers in the Midwest used the Earth Charter as a basis for developing intergenerational programs in 22 different centers. League of EC Voters: Developing in Seattle to educate voters, candidates and legislators about EC and how its principles relate to current issues; EC Community Indicators: Unique in number of citizens involved (10,000); measurement of personal sense of community/connection; and intensive follow-up citizen training on implementation of indicators. |
