Earth Charter +10 marks the tenth anniversary of the Earth Charter since its launch at the Hague Peace Palace in June 2000. It is a yearlong celebration of the many milestones and accomplishments of the Earth Charter movement during the past decade. Events to celebrate and engage people with the Earth Charter will be taking place around the world throughout the year. Earth Charter US is inviting Americans to join the global celebration by organizing EC+10 gatherings in their homes and communities on December 3, 2010 in conjunction with the Earth Charter International Event in Ahmedabad, India.

Earth Charter US in Zambia

Poverty in the rural areas of Zambia presents a significant environmental, health, social, and economic challenge. About 80% of Zambia's 10.2 million people live in the rural areas, an area about the size of Texas. The average yearly income is $250 American. 80% of Rural Households collect firewood as their main cooking energy. Only 35% of rural areas have access to a safe water supply. 68.5% of the rural people live in traditional houses. Subsistence farming is the main source of food, with the little surplus being sent to the government to feed the cities, yet that surplus approaches 90% of the urban food supply. Add a comment

Sustainability. The word is popping up everywhere these days, and interest continues to grow in making everything more sustainable, from lawns to communities to businesses. But it doesn’t happen overnight. Cultivating a more sustainable world takes careful thought and creative collaboration among people with diverse values, backgrounds and experience. The development of the ECUS Sustainable Business Awards is a fascinating example of how very different people can work together toward a common goal that benefits all.
