Record Number of Nominations for 2010 Nobel Peace Prize

The BBC reported yesterday that a record number of individuals have been nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, an honor that has been given in recent years to President Barack Obama, former Vice President and climate change activist Al Gore, Muhammad Yunus - who pioneered the micro-financing model that has helped lift millions out of poverty, and former President Jimmy Carter who has fought tirelessly for human rights around the world. (You can find a full list of Nobel Laureates on the Nobel Prize Website)

Among this year's record 237 nominations, one in particular has attracted a lot of attention - the Internet:

The internet's nomination has been championed by the Italian version of Wired magazine for helping advance "dialogue, debate and consensus"...

The nomination for the internet is supported by 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and the founder of the $100 laptop project Nicholas Negroponte...

It is unclear who would accept the prize if the internet were to win.

Internet for Peace, set up to help support the nomination of the internet, says the prize would be "a Nobel for each and every one of us".

The list also includes more traditional contenders including Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina and Chinese activist Liu Xiaobo.

Who do you think should win this year's prize? Post your ideas in the comments and we'll highlight them on the blog.
